Stone masonry in Lehi UT - rock walls built for the slope they hold back
A slope that's slumping or a rock wall that's leaning? We build stone walls matched to what the ground has to hold back.

What kind of stone wall does your Lehi slope need?
Stone masonry in Lehi mostly means rock walls that hold back earth or protect a slope, and at Precision Lehi Concrete and Masonry we build them either dry stacked or mortared, depending on how much your slope has to hold.
Usually you've got a yard that drops away from the house, a bank that slides dirt onto the patio every spring, or an old rock wall that's started to lean, and before anything else I want to know how tall the wall has to be and what sits above it. Height, length and the stone you choose set most of the price, and a wall tall enough to need an engineer's design and a city permit adds those steps to the schedule, so I go over what yours calls for when I come out for the estimate.

Stone walls and the masonry around them
How we build a stone masonry wall
We start with the rock itself, and I steer you away from stone that soaks up water because water in the stone is what our winters go to work on. Then we pick the build, a dry stacked wall where each rock locks in by its own weight and shape when the slope is modest, or a mortared wall when there's more to hold back. From there our crew digs out, sets the base or footing, lays the stone course by course with the heaviest rock low, and backfills behind it so water can drain away instead of pushing on the wall.
A stone wall often sits right beside the house, so if the brick there has crumbling joints we can take care of the brick pointing while we're on site. And if the slope trouble turns out to be pushing on the house itself, with a cracked basement wall or a corner that's dropped, I'd look at foundation repair first, because a new wall outside won't fix ground that's already moving under the house.
Why Lehi homeowners call Precision Lehi Concrete and Masonry for stone walls
I look at the slope myself
I come out to every estimate myself and then work on site with our crew of masons, so the person who read your slope is the one watching the stone go in. Nothing gets lost between what we talked about and what gets built.
Footings set for Lehi ground
The city requires every retaining wall footing in Lehi to sit below the frost depth, measured from the front face of the wall, and some ground here is collapsible soil that's firm when dry but can settle a lot once it gets wet. So I check the soil and where water runs on your lot before we set anything, whether you're in Lehi or one of the cities around it from Provo up into the Salt Lake Valley.
Licensed and insured on wall jobs
We're licensed and insured, which matters on a wall job with heavy rock, an open trench and a crew working on your property. You're welcome to ask about it when I'm out for the estimate.
Building in Lehi since 2021
I spent my school summers on a masonry crew mixing mortar and carrying block, and I started this business in Lehi in 2021. A tricky wall is still my favorite kind of job, because working out why a slope moved is how you build the next wall right.
On a stone wall, the height and what sits above it decide most of the job, so it helps to know roughly how tall the wall needs to be, whether a building or roadway sits above it, and whether your lot has a recorded easement. Then tell us about your slope or call (385) 338-6022.

What happens after you call about a stone wall in Lehi?
Call or send a message
Call (385) 338-6022 or use the form and tell us a little about the slope and how tall the wall needs to be. We'll get back to you to set a time for me to come out.
I walk the slope with you
I look at the stone, the soil and whatever's causing the trouble, and I'll ask a few questions about how you use the yard. Your estimate lays out the wall we'd build, the stone we'd use, the price, and whether it needs an engineer and a permit.
We handle permits and build
Once you say go, we take care of any permit and inspection steps with the city, and our crew builds the wall with me on site. When a wall needs an engineer's design, that comes before the city's review, so it's the part of the schedule we plan around.
Walk the finished wall together
Before we pack up, we walk the wall with you and go over the stone, the drainage behind it and what to keep an eye on. You'll know what we built and why we built it that way.
Stone wall questions from Lehi homeowners
How do I know if I need a permit for a retaining wall in Lehi?
You need a permit from the city's Building Division when a new or altered wall holds back 4 feet of fill or more, and walls holding back less than 4 feet are exempt. That permit is issued on its own, not as part of the permit for a new home, remodel or addition, so plan for it separately if the wall is part of a bigger project. You can read Lehi's retaining wall rules, and when your wall needs a permit we handle the application and book the inspections.
Can a boulder wall hold back a tall slope in Lehi?
No, Lehi allows rock and boulder walls for landscaping only, and none of them may hold back more than 4 feet of fill. A building, a roadway or other weight above the wall can't rely on one for support either, so a taller slope or one carrying a load needs a different, engineered wall. I'll tell you at the estimate which side of that line your slope falls on.
Does my retaining wall need an engineer in Lehi?
Yes, if the wall needs a permit, because the city wants a design made for your site and stamped by a civil, structural or geotechnical engineer registered in Utah. A generic standard design falls short, so the engineer has to come in before the city reviews the permit. If you already have one, bring the design to the estimate.
What is the best stone for a wall that freezes and thaws every winter?
Dense stone that doesn't soak up much water usually holds up best, because one lab study found natural stone notably vulnerable to repeated freezing and thawing, with highly porous stone hit hardest. That's exactly what a Lehi winter does to a wall, so how porous a stone is belongs near the top of the list when you're picking one.
How much does a stone retaining wall cost in Lehi?
The cost comes down mostly to the wall's height and length, the stone you choose and whether the slope calls for a dry stacked or a mortared wall. A wall tall enough to need an engineer's design and a permit costs more than a low landscaping wall, and how easy the site is to reach and how much digging the footing takes move the number too. I give you a price for your wall at the on-site estimate.
Can I build a retaining wall on a utility easement in Lehi?
Only if the easement owner agrees and the city gets documentation of that agreement, and that goes for any recorded easement, such as a utility or trail easement. Check your property records for one before we design the wall, since it can change where the wall goes.
Work that goes with stone masonry
Brick pointing
When the brick on the house next to your new stone wall has soft or missing mortar joints, repointing them keeps water from working into the wall behind.
Foundation repair
If the slope you're holding back has already pushed or settled the ground under your house, the foundation needs looking at before a new wall goes up outside.
